Torch-On Felt Roofing in Borehamwood

A leak from a felt roof is rarely a mystery once someone is up there. It is usually a split, a blister or a lap that has lifted at the edge. TNR Roofing Services finds the fault and either patches it with matching felt or, where the covering has had its day, strips it off and lays a new torch-on roof.

Our felt roofing team reaches homes and commercial properties across Borehamwood and the rest of WD6 from Hemel Hempstead. We test the deck boards during the free survey, because new felt laid on soft timber soon fails, and the quote is based on what we actually find.

What's included

Our Felt Roofing Services in Borehamwood

The main parts of the job, each listed in your quote.

  • New torch-on felt roofs laid in bonded layers, with a base sheet on the deck and a mineral cap sheet on top.
  • Splits, blisters and lifted laps in existing felt patched with matching material before water reaches the deck.
  • Perished felt stripped back to the deck, with soft or rotten boards replaced so the new layers have a firm base.
  • Garage, shed and outbuilding roofs re-felted to keep vehicles, tools and stored items dry.
  • Felt dressed up walls and around roof lights and outlets, finished with drip trims that shed water into the gutter.
  • Felt roofs for shops, workshops and other commercial premises, with work arranged around opening hours where possible.

Felt Roof Costs in Borehamwood

No two felt roofs in Borehamwood cost the same, and these points account for most of the difference:

  • The number of felt layers specified, from a two-layer system to a heavier three-layer build-up
  • How much old felt and loose chippings need stripping and taking away
  • The condition of the deck boards and how many need replacing before the new felt goes down
  • Upstands, abutments, roof lights and outlets that the felt has to be dressed around
  • Safe access to the roof, such as a tower or scaffold on a taller extension

How it works

Our Felt Roofing Process in Borehamwood

What happens from your first call to the finished work.

  1. Free Survey and Deck Check

We look for splits, blisters, lifted laps and standing water on the existing felt, and test the deck for soft or sagging areas, so the quote reflects what is really there.

  2. Stripping and Priming

Old felt and loose chippings are removed, rotten boards are replaced, and the deck is cleaned and primed so the new layers bond firmly.

  3. Torching on the Layers

The base sheet is torched onto the deck, then the mineral cap sheet is bonded over it with the laps staggered so no joint sits above another.

  4. Edges, Upstands and Handover

Felt is dressed up walls and finished at the drip trims and outlets. We clear old felt and offcuts from site, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a leaking felt roof be patched rather than replaced?

If the leak comes from one split, blister or lifted lap and the rest of the felt is still flexible and well bonded, a patch repair is often enough. Where the felt is cracking all over or the deck has softened, replacement is the better use of your money.

Is felt suitable for a balcony or roof terrace?

Felt copes with occasional access for maintenance, but regular foot traffic wears the mineral surface and the laps. For a balcony in WD6, a hard GRP finish is usually the better choice, and we can quote for that instead.

Will Hertsmere Borough Council need to approve a new felt roof?

Replacing old felt with new is normally treated as maintenance. Listed buildings and homes in conservation areas can be different, so check with Hertsmere Borough Council if either applies to your property.

What happens if the boards under my felt are rotten?

We replace the soft or rotten boards before any new felt goes down. Laying fresh felt over a failing deck only hides the problem, and the new covering would not last.
