Moss Removal

How Moss Damages a Roof over Time

Moss usually starts in the shaded gaps where tiles or slates overlap, often on north-facing slopes or beneath trees. As the cushions thicken they lift the bottom edges of the covering, letting wind-driven rain creep underneath, and their roots hold moisture in the joints long after the rest of the roof has dried. Left for several seasons, heavy growth can also choke valleys and send clumps into the gutters with every storm.

TNR removes moss from tiled and slate roofs on homes and commercial buildings across Hertfordshire, Hampshire and Surrey. Depending on the covering and how deep-rooted the growth is, the moss is cleared from the surface and soft wash treatment may be used on the remaining moss, algae and lichen, with the method settled after a free inspection of your tiles or slates. Once the roof is clear, the moss that has dropped into the gutters is removed too, leaving the outlets running freely.

Moss and lichen on roof slates

What's included

Moss, Algae and Lichen Treatment Included

The main parts of the job, each listed in your quote.

  • Removing thick moss cushions from the laps between tiles or slates, where they lift the edges.
  • Soft wash treatment, where it suits the covering, to tackle the remaining moss, algae and lichen.
  • Freeing valleys, hips and the areas behind chimneys from moss that slows water running off.
  • Checking for cracked or slipped tiles and slates exposed once the moss has gone, and reporting them to you.
  • Clearing fallen moss from gutters and outlets so it cannot block them in the next downpour.
  • Sweeping up moss and debris from paths and patios below the roof once the work is finished.

Why choose us

The TNR Approach to Roof Moss

Soft Wash Where It Suits

Soft wash treatment is available for coverings that suit it, treating moss, algae and lichen across the roof surface rather than only the visible clumps.

Damage Reported, Repairs Available

Moss can hide cracked tiles and slipped slates. As roofers, we report what we find and can quote for any roof repairs needed.

No Blocked Outlets Left Behind

The moss that falls during removal is cleared from the gutters and outlets before we leave, so rainwater can drain away freely.

Checkatrade Member, Fully Insured

TNR is a vetted Checkatrade member with public liability insurance in place for the work on your roof.

What Changes the Cost of Moss Removal

Moss removal is quoted after a free inspection, and the price mainly reflects these points.

  • How thick and widespread the moss is, from light patches to cushions across whole slopes.
  • Whether soft wash treatment is needed for algae and lichen as well as the moss itself.
  • The covering, since slate, clay tiles and concrete tiles each call for a different level of care.
  • The roof's height, pitch and access, including any conservatories or extensions underneath.
  • How much moss has already collected in the gutters and valleys.

The work

From Inspection to a Moss-Free Roof

The main stages of the job, from the first inspection to the final check.

  1. Identifying the Covering and Growth

We check whether the roof is concrete tile, clay tile or slate, how sound it is and how far the moss, algae and lichen have spread, then confirm the method in your quote.

  2. Removing the Moss

Thick moss is cleared from the slopes, laps, valleys and ridges, working from the ridge downwards so material falls towards the gutters rather than under the courses.

  3. Soft Wash Treatment Where Suitable

If soft wash treatment is part of the agreed method, it is applied to the cleared surface to treat what remains of the moss, algae and lichen.

  4. Gutters Cleared and Work Reviewed

Fallen moss is lifted from the gutters, outlets and ground below, and we review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Questions About Roof Moss Removal

Is moss on my roof actually a problem?

A light covering is mostly cosmetic, but thick moss lifts the edges of tiles and slates, holds damp in the overlaps and sheds clumps into the gutters. Removing it while it is still thin is simpler than dealing with the blockages and slipped tiles it can lead to.

What is soft wash treatment?

Soft wash treatment applies a cleaning solution to the roof surface to treat moss, algae and lichen, rather than relying on force to strip the growth away. How well it suits your roof depends on the covering and its condition, which the free inspection confirms.

Is moss removal suitable for an older slate roof?

It can be, with care. Older slate can be brittle, so the method is chosen with that in mind, and any cracked or loose slates are pointed out to you rather than disturbed further. If the slates are badly worn, the inspection may suggest repairs alongside the moss removal.

Should moss be removed before roof repairs are carried out?

It often helps. Clearing heavy moss shows the true condition of the tiles or slates, so repairs can be priced accurately, and replacement tiles are not left sitting against wet growth. We can quote for both after a single free inspection.

Do you clear moss out of the gutters as well?

Yes. Moss inevitably falls into the gutters during removal, so the runs and outlets are cleared before we leave. If the gutters were already blocked or damaged, we let you know, and gutter cleaning or repairs can be added.
